Lucky Seven 12 Year Old Single Barrel The Proprietor

A little background

Lucky Seven Spirits was co-founded by Michael Lahalih and John Pals, who have been friends since their college years. Both men share a passion for bourbon and cinema, which sets the perfect stage for Lucky Seven Spirits. The 12yr Single Barrel “The Proprietor” label is reserved for barrels that are so special that they’re too good to be blended with anything else, according to Lucky Seven. This review is of Barrel No. 7, which was bottled at 118.3 Proof and has a retail price of around $130. The distiller and mash bill of this Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is not disclosed.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)

Color

Dark Copper

Nose

The nose is quite pleasant with thick sweet notes of vanilla, orange marmalade, oak, and orange creamsicle. This whiskey is quite aerobatic and very pleasant to smell!

Palate

This whiskey has a very thick mouthfeel that coats the entire mouth, and it’s delightful. Flavors of dried and candied fruit, brown sugar, oak, clove, and vanilla dominate. There is a pleasant prickle from the 59.15% ABV, which is quite pleasant.

Finish

The finish is very long-lasting with strong woody oak, vanilla, and brown sugar notes. It leaves the mouth a bit dry, but at the same time begs you to take another sip.

In closing

Lucky Seven Spirits have chosen a unique way to make their whiskey fun, incorporating a cinematic theme. That’s fun and all, but at the end of the day, it’s what’s in the bottle that counts. “The Proprietor” 12yr Single Barrel was nothing short of a fine example of a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. It had an explosive palate with a long and oaky finish. I found it to be well balanced and certainly appreciate the higher proof. This whiskey is on the high end of what I’d pay for a 12-Year-old bourbon, but feel it’s appropriately priced for the quality of what’s in the bottle. I’d without question recommend purchasing a bottle.
