A little background
Frey Ranch Distillery is a small gem that’s tucked away in the Northern Nevada Lake Tahoe Watershed region. The Frey family has a long legacy of farming in this region, dating back to the mid 1800’s. Not only are they still farming today, but they’re utilizing their crops as the key ingredient in their distilling operation. Frey Ranch Distillery is proud to be the states first and only whiskey producer to grow 100% of their grain on-site. Colby Frey, the CEO and Co-Founder of Frey Ranch Distillery is a self-proclaimed “Whiskey Farmer”, and for good reason! Frey Ranch Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey is made from a 100% Winter Cereal Rye and is non chill filtered. The crops are 100% sustainably grown, and the whiskey is distilled, matured, and bottled on-site at the Frey Ranch Distillery making it a true grain to glass operation! Frey Ranch Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey is 100 proof, age for at least 4 years, is made in small batches, and has an MSRP of $60.
(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)
Color
Light Amber
Nose
Vanilla, spearmint, rye spice, orchard fruits, cereal, and some floral notes come through.
Palate
The vanilla and rye spice continue from the palate, and the spearmint transforms to more of a peppermint note. There is an ocean breeze kind of note that makes you feel like you are sitting by the ocean at sunset.
Finish
There is a medium finish with notes of rye spice, vanilla, mint, and tropical fruit.
In closing
Frey Ranch Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey is a solid whiskey at the $60 price point and something I would want to have on my bar. I also think that this product is only going to get better as it continues to age. Overall, I was impressed with this rye whiskey and the overall operations of the distillery.
