Nose

Initially, the nose is sweet with a faint hint of mint. These notes quickly fade to caramel, vanilla, slight smoke, toasted oak, and char. After 10 minutes in the glass, notes of chocolate and cherry are noted.

Palate

The first sip is somewhat thin but coats the mouth nicely. Smoke and oak notes pop then slowly begin to fade. There is a nice heat concentrated on the tip of the tongue and in the back palate. The second sip is pleasant with notes of toasted oak and vanilla. The third sip is accompanied by a burst of heat. Toasted oak and vanilla are still present; however, they are more pronounced.

Finish

The finish was interesting. Notes of smoked orange peel and oak were initially present. These notes fade to vanilla and allspice. The finish lingers pleasantly considering the bourbon is 90 proof.

In conclusion

Elijah Craig 18-Year-Old Single Barrel Bourbon is the epitome of Kentucky Bourbon. The nose is sweet and complex. The palate is rich in flavor with notes of toasted oak and vanilla that build with each sip. The finish is unique with hints of smoked citrus. This bourbon is easy to drink and would be a fine addition to any collection.
