A little background

E.H. Taylor Single Barrel is part of the Buffalo Trace lineup and comes from their mashbill number 1. Although the exact recipe is  undisclosed, is speculated to be a low rye mashbill containing less than 10% rye. E.H. Taylor, Jr. Single Barrel is also non age stated but believed to be between 7 and 12 years old. The product is bottled in bond and therefore comes in at 100 proof. Buffalo Trace Distillery is located in Frankfort, Kentucky and produces many well known spirits. E.H. Taylor Single Barrel has a MSRP of $60.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn Glass)

Color

Butterscotch

Nose

The nose is very pleasant with notes of vanilla and butterscotch. Fresh fruit notes of apple, pear, and cherry also shine through. The nose is very crisp and refreshing.

Palate

On the palate, the butterscotch and cherry notes carry over from the nose, but a ton of spice becomes apparent as well showcasing itself as cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg. There is also a fair amount of sweet oak on the palate. The bourbon has a medium viscosity.

Finish

This single barrel has a medium finish as it moves down the palate and up the roof of your mouth. The butterscotch, cinnamon, and just general crispness of the bourbon really shine.

In closing

E.H. Taylor, Jr. Single Barrel is a great bourbon that I would love to have on my bar. At $60 it is a great value, and I would buy one for sure. The problem is that it is extremely hard to find and a lot of times gets marked up by retailers. I would say that if you can find this close to retail to definitely give it a shot.
