Blanton's Gold

A little background

Originally launched in 1984 under the guidance of the distillery’s master distiller Elmer T. Lee, Blanton’s bourbon has become one of the most sought after bottles of bourbon on the market today. Blanton’s Gold Edition was created for discerning bourbon aficionados who appreciate exceptional smoothness and complexity in their bourbon whiskey, according to Buffalo Trace. The bottle sampled for this review came from barrel no. 31 and was dumped on 2-24-2016. Blanton’s Gold is not available in the United States and is only available for purchase in select international markets. The mash bill ratios for this bourbon are not available, however it uses the Buffalo Trace Mash Bill #2, which is said to be 12-15% rye. Blanton’s Gold is bottled at 51.5% ABV.

(Tasted neat from a Glencairn.)

Color in the glass

Golden Amber

Nose

Nutmeg and cinnamon are first to jump out of the glass, along with a small amount of heat from the alcohol. Subtle notes of cherry, wood, candied fruit, citrus, and gumdrop nougat candy are present, but not dominant.

Palate

Creamy with flavors of nutmeg, allspice, egg custard, orange marmalade, and pumpkin pie. Classic bourbon notes are present as well, such as vanilla and caramel.

Finish

This bourbon has an enjoyable finish that’s pleasantly long with flavors of cinnamon, oak and liquorice sticking around.

In closing

Blanton’s Gold has a classic bourbon profile that brings back so many memories of the other great bourbons we’ve tried over the years. It’s very well balanced, with just the right amount of alcohol heat. Although the palate and finish are incredible, it’s the nose that really shines. This is one of those whiskies that you’ll find yourself continuing to sniff throughout the whole drinking experience. Next time your traveling abroad, be sure to keep an eye out for a bottle of Blanton’s Gold!
