1792 High Rye Bourbon

A little background

1792 high rye bourbon first hit shelves in October of 2016 and is still being released as of today.  The mashbill for this whiskey was not disclosed, however it’s been classified as a “high rye” bourbon, with the rye being the second-highest grain in the mashbill. Originally part of a limited release for Barton 1792, it’s since been added it to their annual line up of Limited Edition Expressions, along with Sweet Wheat, Aged 12 Years, Single Barrel, Full Proof, Bottled in Bond and Port Finish. 1792 High High Rye has an MSRP of $36.

Color

Dark Honey

Nose

While there is a good amount of body on the nose, there are not that many distinguishable notes or aromas. As the bourbon sat in the glass notes of caramel, sweet vanilla, and fresh fruits subtly emerged. 

Palate

The first sip overtakes your mouth in a warm oily coat. The second sip is dominated by rye spice. That rye spice is quickly overtaken by a blend of dried fruit, butterscotch, and caramel cinnamon. The more the bourbon opened up the more the spice dissipated.

Finish

Heavy corn notes on the finish, which were relatively short overall. The corn note seems to be the only flavor to stick around.

In conclusion

The spice of this high rye bourbon was primarily on the front of the palate. The longer the bourbon sat in the glass the more the sweeter notes were able to shine through. I felt like the overall complexity of this bourbon could have been more developed. For being a high rye bourbon, the rye spice was missing for me. This would be an ideal bottle for someone who is new to bourbon and wants to try a high rye mashbill. The rye is not overpowering, making it a great introduction to high rye mashbill. This is without a doubt a “must buy” should you be fortunate enough to come across a bottle, especially at the low retail price of $36 bucks!
