Ampersand Vinea

A little background

Ampersand Vinea is a limited-production blend of American rye whiskey and Cognac cask-aged grain spirit created by master blender Chip Tate, Master Distiller for Innovation at Foley Family Wines & Spirits. Bottled at 46% ABV (92 proof) and priced at $59.99 SRP for a 750 mL bottle, the blend consists of 75% rye whiskey and 25% grain spirit aged in XO Cognac casks. The rye whiskey is produced from a 95% rye and 5% malted barley mash bill and aged for more than eight years in new, charred American oak barrels, while the grain spirit is made from 100% corn and matured for nine years in XO Cognac casks. The final spirit is non-chill filtered and blended and bottled at Minden Mill Distillery in Minden, Nevada.

The name “Vinea,” the Latin word for vine, reflects the influence of Cognac casks in the blend and the project’s focus on combining grape and grain spirits. The Cognac barrels used in the production were sourced in Cognac, France and filled with corn-based grain spirit that matured for nearly a decade before blending. Ampersand Vinea is part of the Ampersand Spirits collection, which also includes Malus and Opimus, a series of small-batch releases designed to explore unconventional blending techniques. Approximately 8,520 bottles were produced, with availability in select U.S. markets including California, Nevada, Illinois, Texas, New York, New Jersey, and Florida, along with online sales through the brand.

In closing

Ampersand Vinea delivers a distinctive take on American whiskey blending by combining rye whiskey with Cognac cask-aged grain spirit. The profile leans heavily into fruit and spice, opening on the nose with grape, black cherry, fig, baking spice, honey, orange citrus, and oak. The palate builds on that foundation with rye spice and black pepper layered alongside cherry, fig, citrus, caramel, toffee, baking spice, and oak, while the finish lingers with dried fruit, grape, fig, raisin, oak, and a touch of pepper. The result is a rich and cohesive whiskey with a thick, viscous mouthfeel that enhances the depth of its fruit-forward character.

Ampersand Vinea stands out for its unique blend, complex fruit profile, approachable $59.99 price point, and striking bottle design, though limited availability and a Cognac influence that occasionally overshadows the rye spice may be considerations for some whiskey drinkers. Overall, Ampersand Vinea is a creative whiskey release that showcases how rye whiskey and Cognac cask maturation can come together to produce a layered and memorable drinking experience.
